The mission starts here!

One day in the Covid dark days I started pottering around and rearranging my complicated recycling situation.

Under the sink I had 2 small bins for things that could go in my general waste and mixed recycling bin. Next to these was a plastic bag full of soft plastics. In the laundry there were two shoe boxes, one with old pens and cables to take to my local office store. the other with cut open and washed out toiletries to drop to my local pharmacy. Then there was the box of mixed ‘other’, dentistry items, blister packs, bottle caps. Next to all this was the laundry sink, with old clothes and shoes in it. Let’s not forget the batteries in the cutlery drawer.

Sound familiar? If you are also an avid or ‘hero recycler’ as I like to call us, your home situation might be like this. Organised chaos. Do you wait to stock up enough to make the journey worth it, or do a run every week. However you manage it, the home systems aren’t always easy to navigate or space-saving.

So, four lock-downs later and I had drawn up some ideas on what the perfect, or at least ‘better than this’ solution could look like. By lock-down six (Melburnians know this time calculation), I’d also designed an app to help educate others who often asked me how I knew how to recycle these less common items, or what to do with things that can’t go in your bin or to you local Council recycling hub.

So, here we are. Watch these space as I keep pushing ideas to actuality.
